The first oriental carpets to be produced were an outcome of the necessity of nomadic tribes to protect themselves against harsh climatic conditions. These were woven in wool as simple mats and then thanks to the arrival of natural colours came the first designs using more than one colour known as kilims (a thin carpet without a pile). Later came the first knotted carpets.

In the year 1949, the oldest carpet that we know of was found in a tomb in The Steppes of Central Asia where due to the low temperatures of the area the carpet was well conserved.

Studies reveal that the "Pazyryk" carpet; named after the "Altai mountains", where it was found, may have been woven in the V Century BC, but the fine taste and refined finish of the carpet compels us to believe that carpet making began long before.

The displacement of the nomads led to the spreading and enrichment of the carpet culture especially in terms of design and techniques. The Caucasian region, Anatolia, "Persia", Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, China, India and what we know today as Pakistan are all areas where the production of oriental carpets once evolved and still flourish. The rest of the story is widely known, Kings and Nobles always took keen interest in precious and handmade carpets by commissioning particular designs and colours. This often influenced the taste and therefore their production. Today the oriental carpet is an object of decoration and collection, a precious item used to enrich and to add value and beauty to any home or internal environment.
